When the Robert C. Byrd High School football team steps onto the field Friday night in the 2012 High School Football Playoffs, the Eagles will have a tough task. RCB faces No. 1 ranked, undefeated and defending State Champion, Wayne.
Byrd Head Coach Bruce Carey said Wayne will me aggressive. The Pioneers have good size and speed. Wayne is a solid team and has a lot of confidence in what it's doing. Coach Carey said not too many teams match up well with the Pioneers. The Eagles will have to try and do that. Wayne is a team that likes to run the ball. If they Pioneers pass, they're just playing with it. Coach Carey said if Wayne tries to key-in on one of his wide receivers or running backs, he is confident that the other players will step up to help. Coach Carey said playing on the road won't effect his team much. The Eagles are dominated by seniors and the older players handle road game situations better.
Wayne Head Coach Tom Harmon said he knows RCB has a good coach and the team's athleticism is what stands out to him when he watches film. Coach Harmon said he knows RCB has had to scratch and claw its way through the playoffs. His team hasn't had to do that but it works in RCB's favor and will be to the Eagles advantage Friday night. Coach Harmon said he's not really sure that home field advantage matters that much and you can't underestimate a team that's as excited as Byrd is. You also can't ask Coach Harmon which team may be in better shape. He said at this point in the season conditioning goes out the window. Everyone is in shape. Wayne has last year's state championship hanging over its head and pressure to do it again in 2012.
