Belington Presbyterian Church Provides Thanksgiving Meals to Area Residents

Posted: Updated:

A Barbour County church reached out Thursday to make sure its neighbors have a chance to enjoy the holiday.

The Belington Presbyterian Church opened its doors on Thanksgiving morning to area residents for a hot Thanksgiving meal.

Volunteers gathered early in the morning to prepare the meals, which diners could take home or enjoy there. The church even delivered meals to those who couldn't make it.

"We also pick up the Meals on Wheels individuals who usually get Meals on Wheels and so this way, they get a hot meal on Thanksgiving, and it's just a way of reaching out to the community because we know that there are so many that need a good hot meal," said Reverend Joanne Glaser, of Belington Presbyterian Church.

The church has been providing meals for so many years now that it's worked its way into others' traditions, too. Richard Proudfoot makes the walk across town every Thanksgiving morning to enjoy a hot meal and good company, thanks to the church.

"I'm single, and I live alone, and to have a meal that's cooked like this, it's a home-cooked meal, and I really enjoy it and appreciate it," Proudfoot said.

And while the congregation is happy to help fill the bellies of Belington, Reverend Glaser said they get to take something away for themselves.

"We get a sense of joy knowing that we're able to serve the community this way," Glaser said. "It's just knowing that God has given you an opportunity and you're fulfilling that opportunity."

An opportunity the church plans to continue to take in the future.
