Reminisce with memories of family traditions and discover how others celebrate this time of year with two new exhibits opening Nov. 23 at the Clay Center.

  • "Traditions: A Celebration of Heritage" – See whimsically designed and decorated trees and original works by emerging WV artists in this annual display.

  • "WV Contemporary Quilt Invitational" Organized by the Kanawha Valley Quilters Guild, this exhibit displayes award-winning quilts from throughout the Mountain State.

Clay Center President and CEO Judy Wellington said the already-scheduled quilt display helped inspire the theme for this year's holiday exhibit.

"Quilting has been a popular art form in this area for generations. Quilts often represent family traditions, and they are passed down as family heirlooms," she said in a news release. "We wanted to extend that theme to our holiday exhibit, so we decided to celebrate the common and unusual things that make this season special to different people."

The exhibits open on the same day as Holly Day, the Clay Center's annual family holiday celebration, taking place from noon to 4 p.m.

"Traditions" will be open through Dec. 30. "WV Contemporary Quilt Invitational" will be joined by another display when "American Quilts in the Modern Age, 1870 – 1940" opens Dec. 21. Both quilt exhibits will remain on display through March 30.

Museum gallery admission is free for museum members or $6 for children and $7.50 for adults.
