Several hundred students did not attend school at Morgantown High School Tuesday after word of a potential shooting spread throughout social media.

Monday evening, a message was sent out via Twitter that said a potential shooting would occur on Tuesday at Morgantown High, according to Dr. Frank Devono, superintendent for Monongalia County Schools.

The Monongalia County Board of Education alerted Morgantown Police to the incident.

After an investigation, Devono said a message was sent to Morgantown High School parents alerting them that it was safe for students to attend school Tuesday.

The Morgantown Police Department is investigating and said they are still trying to determine if the threat is credible. Police said they are conducting interviews and talking to students as a part of the investigation.

Devono said that of the 1,600 students that attend the high school, several hundred did not attend school Tuesday.

We will provide more information as it becomes available.
