Monongalia County Health Department Advises People to Prepare for Flu Season

Posted: Updated:

Flu season is getting a jump start locally.

The Monongalia County Health Department said more than 800 cases have been confirmed.

The health department said people should begin protecting themselves now, because as we mentioned before, it takes two weeks for the vaccine to be most effective.

"If we start now you'll be in plenty of time for Christmas," said Ted Krafczyk, of the Monongalia County Health Department. "This will become a problem if a lot of people are sick during Christmas because people travel, interact in large groups, and the more people get the vaccine the safer everyone can be."

The health department said flu season is statistically from January to February.

In 2011 it started in mid-March.

The Health department said early December numbers could indicate a long flu season.
