MORGANTOWN -

Some Monongalia county students spread good tidings and cheer to nursing home residents Wednesday.

Students from Mason Dixon Elementary School visited Sundale Nursing Home to wish residents a Merry Christmas.

"I'm giving gifts to people in the nursing home because I might be the only Christmas they get, so I'm trying to put smiles on their face," said Ashley Chisler, 8.

Wednesday morning the third graders filled up the nursing home, and their voices filled the air.

"The residents get real excited about the children coming," said Donna Tennant of Sundale Nursing Home. "They love kids, they love children. And for them to think about the older population and bring them gifts is just amazing."

"When I hear this, little children act like that, it makes my day very bright," said Sundale resident Cleo Roxanis.

The 60 students visited the home as part of a community service project.

Students sang carols and brought the residents presents.

The experience teaches kids to think of others during the holidays.

"We thought it was important for the kids to get their minds, their thoughts, and their ideas focused toward other people who don't have, because this is the season where a lot of children get the ‘mes' and we wanted them to kind of move their focus a little bit away from that," said third Grade Teacher Dolores Lee.

In the gift bags the students gave word-search books, stuffed animals, soap and shampoo, but hoped to give a little something more.

"I hope the get a Merry Christmas, and a smile on their face," Chisler said.

"I was very proud of them, and I told their teacher, and she said ‘I didn't know they would act this way, but they were beautiful.' I said you should be very proud of all your children here," Roxanis said.
