FAIRMONT -
Marion County residents held a spaghetti dinner Wednesday evening to benefit the United Way and Pleasant Valley Elementary School.
For just $20, patrons could order four spaghetti dinners and a ticket to the Morris Park Celebration of Lights.
This was the second year for the dinner, but the first year that the dinner and Celebration of Lights have been combined. The idea was from Shay Swiger, a sixth grader at Pleasant Valley Elementary.
"We just wanted to raise more money for the United Way so we thought we could have a big dinner. My mom said the easiest thing to make would be spaghetti... so we just came up with that" said Swiger.
The turnout for the dinner was bigger than she expected.
"We were hoping for only 200 people and we got 325 people" Swiger said.
The dinner also raised money for the Linn family of Fairmont, which lost its home to a fire on Monday.
