A man accused of killing Shannon Stafford, 29, in a Morgantown Walmart parking lot in April 2012 pleaded guilty to first degree murder in Monongalia Court Friday.

Larry Mitchell is the father of Stafford's estranged husband.

Judge Phillip Gaujot accepted Mitchell's plea.

Mitchell's guilty plea carries a maximum term of life in prison.

Monongalia County Prosecuting Attorney Marcia Ashdown alleged that Stafford's murder followed a family court proceeding in which Stafford received unsupervised visitation rights with her daughter.

Stafford and her soon to be ex-husband had arranged to meet at the Walmart to switch custody of their daughter Faith.

Mitchell confronted Stafford at her car, then shot her. She tried to escape but fell down, and Mitchell continued to shoot her, according to authorities.
