A federal mine safety agency found explosive levels of gas at an Alpha coal facility, a financial filing states.
According to a filing with the Securities Exchange Commission, Rockspring Development Inc., an Alpha subsidiary, received an imminent danger order from the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The order was issued due to an issue Dec. 4 at the Camp Creek Processing Plant near East Lynn in Wayne County.
According to the filing, the order alleged an explosive mixture of methane and oxygen within a structure that housed a dewatering pump.
The company said the structure was in an isolated area not near the work sites of processing plant. Alpha also wrote that subsequent inspections showed no explosive mixture in the structure.
MSHA also issued a similar order on Dec. 5, Alpha states, regarding the sealed areas of the Camp Creek Mine near East Lynn.
"Upon investigation, MSHA determined that an explosive mixture was not present in the sealed areas of the Mine and that the order had been issued in error. Accordingly, the order was vacated on December 5, 2012,"the filing states.
No injuries had occurred due to the conditions MSHA cited.
Companies are required to include health and safety standards in their quarterly reports. Additionally, the must file special paperwork for certain notices from MSHA, including imminent danger orders.
