Barbour County Churches Making Christmas Brighter

Posted: Updated:

Two Barbour County churches overcame some challenges to make sure children in their area have a very Merry Christmas.

Only last week, Rev. Joanne Glaser of the Belington Presbyterian Church was concerned, since many tags on their magi trees around Belington remained unclaimed. But with the help of the community, all those needs were filled with time to spare.

"We did notice this year that there were a lot of tags left over, but as soon as we let people know that there were children available, and that we needed the help, people just stepped right up and were able to help us. It was great," Glaser said.

Belington Presbyterian is in good company, too. Members of the Haven of Hope church in Barbour County held their annual Hope for Christmas event this past weekend, providing toys for hundreds of children in the area as well. But they didn't stop there; they also provided goods to help the families, too.

"We also gave out to each family a bag of 5 pounds of potatoes and we actually gave out, my wife told me, over one-thousand pounds of potatoes on Sunday as well, and then we had household supplies as well that we were able to give out," said Haven of Hope Pastor Howard Swick.

And both churches said while these efforts are important now, they should continue all year, like the annual Mission 3:16 clothing drive Haven of Hope held in Philippi earlier this year.

"At Christmas time, it seems that you get an influx of people wanting to help out and such, and really the heart of Jesus is not just to help people during his birthday celebration, but we should be doing this every month during the year," Swick said.

Both pastors said they're happy to provide what help they can, and that both churches continue their efforts to try and support their community throughout the year.
