MVB MVPs: State Champion RCB Cheerleading Team

CLARKSBURG -

The Robert C. Byrd High School cheerleading team gets to add a few trophies to the display case at the high school.

The most important one is from this weekend. It's the state championship plaque.

The Flying Eagles are this week's MVB MVPs.

"It was the goal from the first practice and there wasn't a doubt in my mind," said RCB Assistant Coach Jennifer Banko about her team's potential to win it all. "I just had to get the kids to believe it."

It takes a lot of hard work to win a state title in any sport. For the Byrd cheerleaders that meant practicing three hours a day six days a week including 45 minutes of conditioning. The athletes have to be in shape. It may look easy, but tumbling and stunts is hard work.

"It was our main goal and we just worked toward that goal," stated senior Jada Nelson.

So what did a Big 10 Championship, Regional Championship and State Championship get the RCB cheerleaders? A lot of trophies.

"It's a feeling I can't even describe," said Nelson. "It's the biggest accomplishment of my young life so far."

It's Byrd's first-ever cheerleading state title and the Eagles won it in their first year as a Class 'AA' school.

The icing on the cake is that RCB was the highest scoring squad in the entire competition with 348.55 points. That was good enough for a 14 point win over 2nd place, a big margin in cheerleading scoring. It even beat West Virginia's high school cheerleading powerhouse Brooke.

To Byrd, it was just doing what the team new it could.

Banko said, "Instead of worrying about, what are they doing that we aren't, we just made what we were capable of doing the best that it could be."
