West Virginia Wesleyan College introduced its new football coach to faculty, staff, fans and the media Wednesday in an official press conference at the Rockefeller Center on campus in Buckhannon.
The Bobcats chose George Shehl to be the latest Head Football Coach for WVWC. The Clarksburg native was introduced by Athletic Director Randy Tenney.and said he's happy to be close to home again.
"It's where I'm from.," said Shehl. "This is home to me. I grew up in Clarksburg and I've been coming to this campus on and off throughout different sporting events from the time I was in little league. It's a nice place. It's a pleasant, small town. It's close to the highway and on top of that, you've got this wonderful college."
Shehl spent the last two seasons at fellow WVIAC school Charleston. At UC he was the Golden Eagles' Assistant Head Coach, Special Teams Coach and Defensive Coordinator.
In the 2012 season Shehl's defense at the University of Charleston ranked high nationally. In total defense it ranked third (264.5). Against pass defense Shehl's squad was eighth (163.8). UC was six in sacks with 35. Shehl also had the Eagles at No. 15 versus run games (100.7).
Shehl graduated from Robert C. Byrd High School in Clarksburg. He played football for West Virginia University as a walk-on and started for four years as the place holder. He worked as a graduate assistant at WVU, Marshall and The Citadel before UC.
Shehl has a bachelor's degree in Business Marketing from WVU and a master's degree in Business Administration.
