Food and Toy Drive Benefits Monongalia County Families

MORGANTOWN -

The annual United Way Food and Toy Distribution helps underprivileged families have a better holiday season.

The annual event is a team effort, WCLG Radio and Christian Help lead the food and toy drive collections.

On Thursday, months of hard work paid off when the annual distribution helped hundreds of people.

"I have three boys," said Donna Smith, who was shopping for her kids. "Actually, I have one 20-year-old in college, one 16 and one 13. They're wonderful boys. Don't get me wrong, they're a little mischievous and everything, but they're great. They deserve all good things. They're the love of my life."

For families like Donna Smith's, holiday stomachs will be full, just like the underside of the Christmas tree thanks to the annual food and toy drive.

"I got more fitness things for the boys," said Smith. "They're at that age where they like to look good and smell good and feel good about themselves. So I'm here to help them be that."

Even pets were fed by the Monongalia County Humane Society.

Volunteers have been working all week to set up the distribution at the National Guard Armory in Morgantown, and take joy in seeing the smiling faces.

"To see them empowered to be able to go through and pick up the toy for their child, specifically for their age is really uplifting for us to know we're able to help them do that and to make them feel like it's a good holiday," said Lisa Watring of the United Way.

For many of the families, 2012 was a tough year but will end with holiday cheer.

"We hit a little bit of turbulence along the way this year, but it's really going to help," said Smith. "I really appreciate what everything that everyone has done and given, and it's really a good opportunity to make a better day."

Donations can still be made to help families, toys and food can be dropped off at Christian Help located on Walnut Street in Morgantown.
