West Virginia 511 System Goes Online

Posted: Updated:

West Virginia has a new 511 Traveler Information System, and it's free.

It provides real time traffic information on all of the state's interstates and major highways.

The West Virginia Division of Highways said it will help you "Know Before You Go."

"How many times you get out and you get stuck in traffic, so if you can check the web site or call 511 and before you head out the door in the morning, you know drivers are going to be more prepared for accidents or workzones or something that may lie ahead of them," said Carrie Bly, spokesperson with WVDOT.

By dialing 511 from any landline or mobile phone, callers receive traffic information, road conditions and weather forecasts in addition to transfers to the Department of Tourism and neighboring states' 511 systems.

West Virginia's 511 also is updated with public safety alerts, including AMBER and Silver alerts.

The web site provides an interactive map. The map allows users to view traffic cameras from around the state, along with showing the location of electronic roadway signs and their current messages.

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin helped launch the new 511 system on Wednesday in Charleston. Tomblin stresses the importance of having a statewide travel system to help responders and travelers in situations like Wednesday's gas explosion in Sissonville.

"We have now the communication systems where we can immediately, in yesterday's case, you know talk from Parkersburg back to Charleston or whatever, you know and let everyone know what's going on, so it's not only state police talking to state police, but state police talking to fire departments to local police to emergency officials and so forth, and that's one of the reasons yesterday went so smoothly," said Tomblin.

Call toll free DOT's 511 or visit their web site to get real time traffic updates or download the free mobile app on your smart phone.

There's also several sites you can follow them via Twitter.
