A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of California and Mexico Friday morning.

A 6.3 earthquake struck at 5:36am EST and minutes later a powerful aftershock, a 4.7, occurred just north of the original earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The original earthquake hit 162 miles south-southwest of Avalon, California.  The aftershock occurred 95 miles south-southwest of Avalon.

Originally, it was thought a 6.4 and 6.1 earthquake happened within moments of each other.  It was later confirmed that there was only one earthquake.

No tsunami warning has been issued.
