Thursday, the National Guard celebrated its 376th birthday.

Friday, the Mountaineer ChalleNGe Academy graduated its second class of 2012.

The ChalleNGe Academy is a part of the National Guard's Youth Foundation Program.

It's an alternative education program that works with kids who are at risk of dropping out of school.

The students graduating began the 22-week course in July.

In that time, they improved their grade level by more than two-and-a-half years.

"Today is a day of celebration," said principal Pamela Kelly. "We have 99 students who are graduating from that program, probably the most intensive class in the country."

The ChalleNGe Academy has graduated more than 2,500 students. After graduating, students will return to the classroom, get a job, or join the military.
