BRIDGEPORT -

The holidays can be hard for some people. Especially for those who lack a basic need like food. That's why the Bridgeport Fire and Police Departments teamed up to help the Shepherd's Corner.

The City of Bridgeport has been conducting this annual food drive for as long as most people can remember.

"There's multiple organizations helping us," said Chuck Feathers, the Chief of the Bridgeport Fire Department. "The Bridgeport Police department is now an active participant, along with the VIP's which is the Volunteers in Police Service along with Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department. So all of us are getting together to put enough people on the streets to help the needy."

They all leave from the Bridgeport Fire Department at 10 a.m. and head out to collect food for Shepherd's Corner.

Each year they make it easy for people to donate.  They go out in the community to citizens homes and pick the food up for them. Each person who donates, big and small, gets a visit and a treat from Santa.

"The people of Bridgeport are so gracious in helping Shepherd's Corner and we are just the vehicle to get the food to the Shepherd's corner," Feathers said. "Annually we try to get the food and go up and down the streets. We ask the people to give what they can. They actually set their canned food on their porch and our people will go up and down the streets."

The program is completely voluntary and the Fire Department says this year there is no specific goal.

"All we want to do is gather as much food as we can and it'll help the people at Christmas time and maybe make somebody's Christmas a little brighter," Feathers said.

Shepherd's Corner is always accepting donations of non-perishable food and personal care items.
