The Randolph County Board of Education accepted the resignation of Superintendent James Phares at its meeting on Monday.
Dr. Phares will step down on December 30 and assume his new responsibilities as state superintendent in January.
The board will hold a special meeting on December 26 to appoint an interim superintendent, who will have the job until July 31.
"We have decided to accept Dr. Phares' resignation. He is going to the state department, and we would like to wish him well. He has been fantastic for Randolph County, for the school and the students," said president Lisa Wamsley.
Wamsley said Dr. Phares has been transparent as Randolph County's superintendent.
