This weekend, the weekend before Christmas, is sure to be a busy travel weekend.

And the snow and ice on the roads, and below-freezing temperatures could make it dangerous.

Harrison County 911 said the first big storm of the season is always the worst for accidents and encourages everyone to drive with caution, and to be prepared for the worst.

"If you're traveling make sure you've got a little bit of water in your car, some warm clothes, some blankets in case you had to get stranded somewhere you'd be able to take care of yourself until someone could get help to you," said Paul Bump, of Harrison County 911.

Bump also suggests checking with West Virginia 511 before you head out the door for the latest on road conditions

A lot of people have also put out their Christmas decorations and Friday's wintry weather could make some of those decorations dangerous.

Harrison County 911 has some safety tips.

First: make sure your decorations are securely fastened so the wind doesn't take them.

"If you've got electrical Christmas decorations out there and they get damaged it could cause breaker issues or power outages," Bump said. "Plus, you have just the danger of electricity with exposed wires if there's enough damage from the wind."

Bump also said to make sure you have plenty of warm clothing and blankets in case the power goes out.
