CHARLESTON, WV — West Virginia's Division of Culture and History will celebrate the traditional music of West Virginia on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-25, at the Culture Center during the 37th annual Vandalia Gathering. The family-friendly event is free.

To ring in the New Year, Davis & Elkins College is planning two celebrations for the community: an elegant Graceland dinner buffet and a new Halliehurst Ball designed for late night gaiety.

Guests can opt to attend one or both events and also take advantage of special overnight rates at Graceland.

According to Scott Goddard, D&E vice president for student affairs and chair of the planning committee, the college is hoping the events will fill a need in the area.

"We surveyed what was available to the community on New Year's Eve and felt there was room for a new top-notch event," he said in a release. "Halliehurst seemed like a natural venue for an evening ball, so we have put together what we think is a fun, well planned event with music, food and the best views in town."

The Halliehurst Ball is scheduled for Dec. 31 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. with a midnight breakfast. Every guest will receive a champagne favor and enjoy dance music with DJ Jeff Jones.

Valet parking is also on tap for convenient curb service. Heavy hors d'oeuvres plus soda, punch, coffee, beer and wine will be offered as part of the evening package. And at midnight, fresh and hearty breakfast selections will be served. The price per couple is $100. Individual tickets are $60.

The New Year's Eve dinner in Graceland will feature a traditional buffet from 5 – 9 p.m. on Dec. 31.

Menu includes: shrimp cocktail with spicy cocktail sauce; spinach salad with strawberries and roasted pecans; classic French onion soup; carved prime rib au jus and horseradish cream; whipped red bliss potatoes; steamed maple glazed carrots; three cheese and spinach stuffed chicken; wild rice; green beans; assorted rolls and bread; cheesecake with assorted berries; chocolate mousse; strawberries romanoff with whipped cream; coffee and tea.

The price for adults is $24.95; for those age 6-12, $10.95; and free for children age 5 and younger.

Overnight packages are available and include dinner for two at the buffet at Graceland, two tickets to the Halliehurst Ball, plus a night's stay with a gift in the room. Prices range from $250 for guests at the Robert C. Byrd Center to $300 at Graceland Inn.

For those seeking a more private celebration, stay packages are also available with dinner for two at Graceland and champagne and strawberries in the room. Prices range from $140 at the Robert C. Byrd Center to $190 at Graceland Inn.
