A Monongalia County police chief celebrated his retirement on Friday.
Chief James Smith of the Westover Police Department is retiring from the force after nearly 21 years of serving his community.
Smith has worked in the department for more than 20 years, serving as chief the last 14 years.
Smith still plans to be involved in Monongalia County. He said he has accepted a position as deputy director of the Monongalia Emergency Centralized Communications Agency, or MECCA 9-1-1.
"You know, it's a mixed emotion," said Smith. "I'm very excited to move onto my new position. But it's sad to leave what you've done for the last 21 years and the people you've gotten to know."
Following Smith's departure, Lt. Allison Livengood will act as chief. Smith said Livengood will become the first female chief of police in Monongalia County.
