Skiing Season Kicks Off At Canaan Valley

Posted: Updated:

The Canaan Valley Resort and its surrounding communities are getting ready for the season-opening weekend that kicks off Saturday.

Wide views from the mountains in Canaan Valley are what will greet skiers as they arrive for the resort's first day of skiing Saturday. While it may be simple enough to make some snow and open the slopes, there's still plenty of prep work to be done.

The resort is using a new snowmaking system to ready the trails as part of a $12 million expansion, but ski manager Michael Chaney said the first step to getting ready isn't in his hands.

"First of all, you have to have Mother Nature give you the weather to make the snow, and then once you get the snow made, which takes a few days of intense work from snowmakers, groomer operators, mechanics, everybody that's involved, it's a team effort," said Chaney.

The resort staff aren't the only ones getting ready for the kickoff. Businesses in Davis, like Hellbender's Burritos, are stocking their own shelves to be sure they're ready for the rush when the resort starts filling up for the year. Owner Robert Borowitz said it's something that gets better as time goes on.

"Every year gets a little easier for us. This is our sixth winter season, so planning ahead is the thing to do, and we get a little bit better at it every year. And just go to bed earlier," Borowitz said.

Meanwhile, shelves are stocked at the resort, too, ready for the crowds' arrival. And while people are getting outfitted there, Chaney said he's looking forward to a successful season of skiing.

"A lot of stress this year, but now I think we're gaining, Mother Nature's helping us out, and we're getting some more trails open, so looks like it may be a good ski season after all," Chaney said.

If you like tubing more than skiing, you'll have a little longer to wait. Tubing at the resort opens on January 11.
