Girl Gives Her Birthday Party To Clarksburg Mission Kids

For Bridgeport resident Dakota Swiger, her tenth birthday was a chance to pass on a gift of her own.

Kids at the Clarksburg Mission were having fun with hot potato and other party games Monday afternoon. Dakota Swiger wanted to give those kids a chance to enjoy a party on New Year's Eve, after another child did something similar for her.

"I had back surgery in Lexington, Kentucky, Shriner's Hospital for Children, and a little girl did that there once," said Swiger.

After Swiger came back from the hospital, she kept asking her mother Heather when they would be able to return the favor for other children. The opportunity finally came around this year, with a little urging from Dakota.

"On Wednesday, she kind of gave me a little kick in the bum and told me to call the mission, she wanted to do her birthday. So it kind of took a life of its own. It's been fun and it's a blessing, it's been a wonderful blessing," said Heather Swiger.

It's also a great help for the staff at the mission. They say they try to plan events for the children who stay there, but having a child their own age throw a party for them makes a big difference.

"Oh, it's incredible, just to see a child want to give to her community at such a young age to be so thoughtful and think of someone aside from herself, it's an incredible thing to see and a blessing to see that," said the mission's Alisha Madia.

And of course, in true birthday party fashion, all the kids at the party left with a goodie bag of gifts to enjoy in the new year as well.
