COLUMBUS, Ohio -

Huntington Bank CEO Steve Steinour was named Banker of the Year by the American Banker magazine, the leading publication in the banking industry.

Selected from all of the CEOs in the country, Steinour is cited for, among other things, beefing up lending to small businesses and introducing 24-Hour Grace, which gives customers 24 hours to make good on an overdraft.

Steinour, 50, was born and raised in Gettysburg, Pa. A 1980 graduate of Gettysburg College, he started his career as an analyst with the Treasury Department. He later moved to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and then to Bank of New England, where he rose to executive vice president before the bank failed. It was taken over by Fleet Financial in 1991.

He later joined Citizens, becoming its president and CEO in 2006. Two years later, he joined CrossHarbor Capital as managing partner and then was recruited by Huntington.

Huntington's West Virginia region includes Charleston, Clarksburg, Huntington, Morgantown, Elkins and Parkersburg.
