Posted: Updated:

The next round of free training for oil and gas industry jobs through Pierpont Community & Technical College will take place Jan. 28 through Feb. 15, the college announced Jan. 3.

The three-week, 120-hour intensive course prepares and certifies students to work on natural gas and oil rigs at the entry level in the floorhand position. The classes are made available through Marcellus ShaleNET, a grant program from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.

Students will learn the basic rules of gas industry safety and gain an understanding of the skills gas industry production companies are looking for in new employees.

Students also will become aware of the range and diversity of careers in the gas industry. The course content includes knowledge, skills and certifications in safety, CPR, defensive driving, rig components, rigging systems, well control, hydraulics and basic electrical work.

The program also provides job placement assistance.

The ShaleNET grant covers the cost of tuition, and participants are asked to pay for the required background check and drug screening. Students must submit physical forms signed by their doctors indicating they are fit to work, own steel-toed boots for outdoor work and possess valid driver's licenses. Other safety and instructional materials are provided.

Training takes place Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pierpont's Center for Workforce Education in Fairmont.

Space is limited. Screening costs $100 and is non-refundable. For information on how to register and apply, contact Pierpont Continuing Education at 304-367-4920.
