The University of Charleston kicked off its new physician assistant master's program on Jan. 7 with a cohort of 30 students.

The inaugural UC PA class consists of students from 15 states, including Wisconsin, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, California, Texas and Minnesota. Students began the two-year master's program by learning the various processes and procedures, as well as becoming oriented with common medical equipment and learning helpful study tips.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, physician assistant jobs are expected to increase 30 percent from 2010 to 2018. Full-time physician assistants make an average of $86,410 per year.
