Lewis County BOE Discusses Security in Schools

WESTON -

The Lewis County Board of Education met Monday evening for its monthly meeting.

Board members discussed several different topics, many of which had to do with the county's schools and calls from concerned parents.

Issues included teachers leaving the classroom while students were still inside, use of cell phones during class, and scheduling emergency drills.

The recent shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School prompted concerns from the board members about teachers leaving the classroom. If something similar were to happen, or if a student became ill, there would need to be a teacher in the classroom.

Members discussed emergency drills, which are being planned in the local schools. They also discussed teachers having keys that will lock the classroom doors from the inside in case of an emergency.

The work session was open to the public, and the board members only discussed the items on the agenda. No decisions were made.
