Salem Voters to Cast Ballots for Recall Election

Posted: Updated:

Voters in Salem will go to the polls again to cast ballots in a recall election.

City officials said 20 percent of Salem's registered voters have signed a petition to hold a re-election for city council. They said the county clerk's office has accepted the petition, making it a legal document.

Salem's city manager and clerk will verify the signatures with the county clerk's office, and council will set a date for the election.

"It is merely an election. The date will be set for an election date for the person to affirm their seat or if they will be removed from office," said Vice Mayor Robert Samples.

The city manager and clerk will reach an agreement with the petitioners for the cost of the re-election by the end of the week. The petitioners not the city will bear the cost of the election.

Mayor Samples said remaining council members will make appointments to fill any vacancies after the recall election.
