CHARLESTON, WV -

Emily Bittner, communications director for U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., since January 2011, will leave Manchin's office Jan. 14 for position with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Bittner's position there will be national press secretary and senior communications advisor. Prior to her position in Manchin's office, Bittner served as communications director at the Democratic Governors Association and was communications director for the Arizona Democratic Party during the tenure of Gov. Janet Napolitano.

Bittner attended elementary and junior high school in West Virginia, receiving the Golden Horseshoe Award, and graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in political science and journalism.

"I'll always have a special place in my heart for the people of West Virginia, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with a leader like Senator Manchin," Bittner said in a news release. "When you work for Senator Manchin, you don't just show up and punch a clock – you're part of his family. His genuine love for his team, the people of West Virginia and this country are inspiring, and his willingness to solve our problems is most welcome."

Manchin said in a news release that Bittner has been effective in helping him deliver his "commonsense message" in Washington.

"With Emily leaving our office, I'm sad and proud at the same time," Manchin said. "Any time a key member of our staff has an opportunity, you're proud that others see their value – but sad that they're leaving the nest."

Deputy State Director Sara Payne Scarbro and Press Secretary Katie Longo will handle press inquiries for an interim period after Bittner's departure.
