CHARLESTON, WV -

The official turnout for the 2012 General Election in West Virginia was 55 percent, according to numbers released Jan. 9 by Secretary of State Natalie Tennant.

There were 685,099 total votes cast, which includes the 150,666 ballots cast during the early voting period. There were 1,246,559 West Virginians registered to vote in the election.

Tennant said Pocahontas County had the highest turnout in the state, at nearly 72 percent. Barbour, Harrison, Jefferson, Lewis, Marshall, Mineral, Morgan, Putnam, Tucker and Wood counties all had voter turnout over 60 percent. The lowest turnouts were Lincoln County was 38 percent, and McDowell County had 39 percent turnout.

In the race for Governor, 664,347 ballots were cast; 643,582 ballots were cast in the race for Attorney General; 638,440 voters were cast in the race for Secretary of State; 628,483 votes were cast in the race for Treasurer; 619,468 voters were cast in the race for Auditor; and 613,583 votes were cast in the race for Commissioner of Agriculture.
