Lewis County resident Danny Groves wasn't expected to survive after a motorcycle accident that sent him to Ruby Memorial Hospital last year.
But he pulled through, and on Sunday, the county came together to support him and his recovery.
Hundreds of people from around Lewis County gathered at the Lewis County Senior Center to help Groves and his family while his treatment continues. His mother Karen Groves organized the event and she said she's happy to have her son alive, after getting ready for the worst in September.
"I got to the accident and it was like, you know, I just sat there and prepared myself for him not to make it,. All the way to Ruby, I'm like, he's not going to make it, you've got to prepare yourself, and he's been a fighter. He's never given up," said Karen Groves.
But after 80 days in the hospital, Groves is healing at home. The hundreds of people who turned out to the event today enjoyed a homemade pasta meal, live music, and raffles to help raise money for Groves and his family. His wife Stephanie stayed with him for those 80 days, and she and her daughter are glad to have him home.
"I'm very lucky to have him, and I'm very thankful and blessed and our children are, too. They get to have their dad and I get to have my husband and best friend," said Stephanie Groves.
And on his own part, Groves said he's thankful for all the support, and never expected so many to show up and help his recovery. And his sense of humor's alive and well, too.
"It's just... overwhelming. I didn't get to eat all my food because it got cold because everybody stopped to talk to me," said Groves.
