BRIDGEPORT -

Bridgeport City Council met Monday in its first meeting of the year.

One of the main items on the agenda was a proposed tobacco ordinance. This was the second reading of the ordinance.

After hearing public comment and discussion, council approved the ordinance 5 to 1.

The ban prohibits tobacco use in all parks, recreation facilities, and their parking lots.

Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Director Don Burton said the new ordinance was modeled after other cities.

"This is a first time for Bridgeport. We looked at different ordinances across the state, and kind of adapted one from the city of Clarksburg. We changed a few things and came up with our own ordinance," Burton said.

He also explained some of the places the ban would affect.

"Playgrounds, ball parks, walking trails, our new recreation complex up at Charles Pointe, trails out at the lakes, really any park facility," Burton said.

Other businesses at the meeting included a Frontier League baseball team that would play in a new recreation complex in Charles Pointe. Mayor Jim Christie said they are hoping to have the first pitch thrown by May 2014.
