Chasity Schoolcraft, of Gilmer County High School, is the only West Virginia student to win a Horatio Alger Scholarship.

The scholarship provides money to children from lower-income families who have overcome adversity.

Schoolcraft had to write several essays on what she wants her future to hold.

"You had to write about people that inspire you and what you plan to do with the money and how it would help you in the future," Schoolcraft said.

Schoolcraft plans to study marketing at West Virginia University.

She is the second Gilmer County student to win the Horatio Alger scholarship in three years.
