Governor Earl Ray Tomblin appointed Delegate Samuel J. Cann as the successor of former state Senator Joseph Minard in the 12th Senatorial District Wednesday, according to a news release from Governor Tomblin's office.

Cann's appointment is effective immediately, according to the news release.

"From his first day in the House of Delegates, Sam has worked hard for the people of Harrison County, and I am confident he will continue to do so as a state senator," Gov. Tomblin said.

Cann was first elected to the House of Delegates in 1994 and is the senior member of the Harrison County legislative delegation, according to the news release.

Cann has held numerous leadership roles in the house, including chair of the Committee on Small Business and Economic Development and co-chair of the Joint Committee on Economic Development, according to the news release.

Cann was selected over Delegate Tim Miley and Harrison County Commissioner Mike Romano.

Harrison County Democrats will submit three names of potential replacements for Cann and submit them to the Governor.

Officials said Cann is a West Virginia University graduate who resides in Harrison County with his wife, Phyllis.
