MORGANTOWN -
On Monday evening, West Virginia University's Center for Black Culture and Research (CBC&R) celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the start of President Barack Obama's second term.
Part of the group's mission is to provide the university community with cultural and social events from the African world experience.
"We don't take it light. We want to really acknowledge and respect our history," said Bruce E. Mitchell, CBC&R assistant director. "The legacy that Dr. King left for us, as well as to recognize and congratulate the first African American president of the United States."
Mitchell said it was fitting that the group celebrate the inauguration of the first African American president on Dr. King's birthday.
"This is historic," said Ken Gray, WVU's vice president of student affairs. "Even the first inauguration was historic, but for President Obama to be inaugurated for a second term, it really is a historic day. I think Dr. King would really enjoy being a part of this."
The mission of the CBC&R at WVU was established in 1987. If you'd like to learn more about the CBC&R, visit its website.
