Harrison County Board of Education Eliminates Chinese Program

Posted: Updated:

On January 22, the Harrison County Board of Education decided to cut the Chinese program at Bridgeport High School.

Xinying Gao, who was the Chinese teacher, heard the rumor before the meeting, but was still surprised they went through with it. She said she thinks it's a significant loss for the school.

"I think it's a loss for students because they can't choose this as a second language anymore," Gao said.

She felt sad about the decision especially because some of the students have already been studying the language for several years and will no longer be able to go further with it in the classroom.

Gao added that she will miss working in Bridgeport, but she plans to continue teaching Chinese in a different county in West Virginia.
