Presidential
nostalgia, the Motown sound and foreign films will be coming to Huntington this winter as part of the 77th
Marshall Artist Series.
"It's a good,
diverse cross-section of what we do," said Angela Jones. "We will have a lot of
entertainment variety during the winter months."
An iconic actor
will be portraying an iconic president as Ed Asner will perform his one-man
drama "FDR" at 7:30 p.m.
Jan. 30 at the Joan
C. Edwards Performing Arts Center on the Marshall campus.
Based on the
long-running Broadway hit "Sunrise at Campobello," the show explores the life of one of America's best-loved presidents and the events
and decisions that shaped a nation. The play follows FDR as he reflects on his
years in office from the Depression to the trials of World War II.
Audiences may be
most familiar with Asner's television roles. Lou Grant and his other characters
won seven Emmy Awards among 16 nominations and five Golden Globe Awards. He has
been inducted into the TV Academy Hall of Fame. He also has stage credentials
including "Ivanov," "The Tempest," "Face of a Hero" and "King Henry V."
"Any time you
have someone do a one-person show, it is always just amazing to see the talent
and the level of performance that they give to captivate an audience in an
entire theatre," Jones said. "FDR obviously is a compelling character for him
to play."
Music legend
Smokey Robinson will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Feb.
16 at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts
Center.
Robinson
got an early start to his career, founding The Miracles while still in high
school. The group was Berry Gordy's first vocal group, and "Shop Around" became
Motown's first No.1 hit.
He
continued to pen hits for the Miracles including "You've Really Got a Hold on
Me," "Ooo Baby Baby," "The Tracks of My Tears,"
"Tears of a Clown" and "I Second That Emotion."
Robinson
wrote and produced hits for other Motown greats such as The Temptations and The
Supremes, including "The Way You Do the Things You Do," "My Girl," "Get Ready"
and "My Guy." He has received the Grammy Living Legend Award and has also been
inducted into the Rock ‘n' Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters' Hall of Fame.
The
Spring International Film Festival returns Feb. 22-28 at the Keith-Albee. Featured films include "The Skin I Live In"
(Spain), "Where
Do We Go Now?" (Lebanon), "Adrift"(Brazil), "I Wish" (Japan),
"Monsieur Lazhar" (France)
and "The
Deep Blue Sea" (UK).
Jones said the festival
has been popular with both students and the public.
"People are
grateful for a chance to see films from around the world," she said. "It gives
them an opportunity to take a journey without leaving Huntington. They are quite different than the U.S. films."
The Artist Series
continues during the spring months with Tony Award winner "Hair" March 7 and
"The Addams Family" April 28 at the Keith-Albee.
