Harrison County native Sam Cann is officially a state senator.

Cann was sworn into office at the State Capitol on Thursday by former senator Joseph Minard.

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin appointed Cann to succeed Minard last week. Minard will now fill the position of senate clerk.

Cann will serve a four-year term as vice chairman of the Economic Development Committee and will serve as a member of the Pensions, Government Organizations, Agriculture and Judiciary committees.

Cann was first elected to the House of Delegates in 1994 and is the senior member of the Harrison County legislative delegation.

Tomblin selected Cann over fellow Delegate Tim Miley and Harrison County Commissioner Mike Romano.
