Morgantown Utility Board Recognized for Adding Fluoride to Drinking Water

Posted: Updated:

The West Virginia Oral Health Coalition has recognized the Morgantown Utility Board for adding fluoride to its drinking water for 50 years.

The Centers for Disease Control has placed water fluoridation on its list of the 10 greatest public health achievements of the 20th century.

MUB said fluoridation is one of the simplest, most cost effective ways to prevent tooth decay.

"Our entire water treatment process, there is a lot of science behind it that people don't see," said Chris Dale, of MUB. "People turn on the faucet and water comes out. There is a lot of science, a lot of monitoring going on, daily sampling and testing of those water supplies to ensure that the water is safe."

Every dollar invested in fluoridation reportedly saves $38 in dental treatment costs.
