A new survey from State Farm said only one in 10 drivers keeps essential emergency supplies in his vehicle.
The survey by State Farm and KRC Research said more than 60 percent of drivers had junk in their trunk while 99 percent had at least one emergency supply in their vehicle like a spare tire or jumper cables.
State Farm said emergency supplies are relatively inexpensive and even on a short trip you should always be prepared.
"A lot of them are inexpensive and easy to find and it just takes a couple of minutes to purchase items and pack them in your cars so that you're always ready," said Amy Preddy, of State Farm. "Especially in the winter when the temperatures that can drop it can be really miserable being stuck."
Safety representatives with State Farm also recommend checking the condition of those supplies at least twice a year.
Another suggestion is driving responsibly.
"Not only do you need your car prepared," Preddy said. "You need to make sure while your driving your careful and follow winter driving recommendations and that is as simple as slowing down making sure you leave plenty of time to break, if you start to skid stay calm."
