Two of Southern West Virginia's four-year institutions are teaming up to become more efficient and help improve the region.

Administrators from Concord University, located in Athens, and Bluefield State College met this month to form subcommittees that will focus on bridging the gap between the two institutions and work together for the benefit of the region. The subcommittees will work to compare how the schools handle inclement weather policies and also take a look at legislative initiatives, staff development, academic affairs and campuses in the Beckley area.

"This collaboration with Bluefield State College and Concord University reflects both institutions' commitment to serve the citizens of this great state with the best academic programs," said Gregory F. Aloia, president of Concord.

Marsha Krotseng, president of Bluefield State, said the collaboration allows the schools to leverage their strengths to better support local communities and the region.

Aloi and Krotseng co-chair the Legislative Initiatives subcommittee, where they examine ways to coordinate efforts in areas such as working with regional lawmakers, creating seamless transitions into baccalaureate programs for students in the community college system and working to improve southern West Virginia's economy.

Paul Hill, chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, said the schools can use their influence in the community to improve the region.

"Both institutions have a rich history of providing high-quality educational opportunities to the citizens of Southern West Virginia and the surrounding region," he said. "I applaud this increased level of collaboration and partnership, which will ultimately result in greater service to and impact on the local community and the entire state of West Virginia."
