It used to be that most places in America had a doctor in town.

But folks in places like Harman in Randolph County have done without for more than 20 years, until last month, when the new Harman Health Center opened.

The health center held an open house Friday afternoon to show off its new facility.

Pendleton Community Care opened its new Harman location after community members approached it with the idea.

Residents said the new health center could make a big difference for the health of the community as a whole.

"People put off health care many times because it's inconvenient or hazardous to travel to get somewhere, and this takes away that risk. This makes it really fortunate," said Dan Bucher, who helped bring the center to Harman.

Bucher's father was the last doctor in town. He closed his practice in 1991.

Work is continuing at the facility,  with a new pharmacy expected to open in the next four to six weeks.
