PRESTON COUNTY -

The Preston County Commission has suspended the director of the Preston County Animal Shelter.

Commission president Craig Jennings said the commission asked Courtney Austin to attend a meeting Friday concerning the Facebook page of the shelter.

Jennings said when Austin did not attend the meeting and instead deleted the Facebook page, she was suspended.

The page was used to solicit volunteers and financial support from the public, as well as advertise the animals up for adoption. In January, Austin posted a plea for help after the pipes froze and the shelter was left without water.

Austin referred all request for comment to her sister and legal advisor, Cassandra Harvey.

Harvey said she is concerned because the reasons that Jennings gave do not match with the reasons given on Austin's suspension notice.

Harvey said in a statement "it's in best interest of the community if elected officials can work with the public. I'm hopeful that the truth will come out, that Austin's position will be reinstated, and that only the animals at the Preston County Animal Shelter will benefit as a result."

Harvey said Austin is scheduled to meet with the commissioners Monday evening, before their regular public session at 6:30 p.m.
