The Philippi Fire Department responded to a report of a fire on 4-H Road in Barbour County around 1 a.m. Monday.
Firefighters had the fire contained within about 30 minutes, according to Philippi Fire Chief John Greene.
It is believed that the fire started in a wall of the house, Greene said. A 91-year-old woman living in the house woke up to the house filled with smoke and escaped the house safely.
Belington and Junior Mutual Aid and the Belington Emergency Squad also responded to the scene.
