The Preston County Sheriff's Office has arrested an Eglon man and charged him with 75 counts of cruelty to animals.
Sheriff's deputies seized more than 100 animals from David Wayne Shahan's Backbone Ridge residence on Jan. 24 after following up on a complaint.
Deputies worked with the Preston County Animal Shelter to remove 61 chickens, 34 rabbits, seven dogs, and five goats from Shahan's home, said Sgt. J.L. Root Jr.
Sgt. Root Jr. found several dead rabbits and a female dog that was dead inside her doghouse. Many of the animals didn't have access to water and others didn't have access to food.
All living animals were examined by a veterinarian. Five of the dogs were found to be severely malnourished, all 31 rabbits suffered from ear infections, some with additional ailments, and at least 30 chickens suffered from "bumble foot", which is a bacterial infection and inflammatory reaction on the feet of birds, according to the Preston County Sheriff's Office.
Shahan, 42, was released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.
