BUCKHANNON -

West Virginia Wesleyan College has a new degree program for students interested in becoming a Chemical Hygiene Officer.

Wesleyan is the first school in the country with the program.

Lab coordinators said many states have standards exceeding OSHA mandates and they all require a CHO or equivalent.

Instructor Melissa Charlton Smith said the program will help students' career prospects.

"There's a definite need to fill these roles, but not much in academics to provide students and graduates with the requirements and education to fulfill these roles," Smith said.

The program launched last fall, and Smith said she expects enrollment to increase in the near future.
