Juvenile Drops Gun and Accidentally Injures Boy; Gun Owner Arrested

West Virginia State Police in Preston County said a boy, 11, is at Ruby Memorial Hospital and is listed in "serious condition" after he was accidentally shot by a 14-year-old on Friday night.

Troopers said the boy underwent surgery on his pelvis following the shooting.

The owner of the gun, James David Metz, 69, was arrested in Taylor County late Friday night. The accident happened at Metz' house on Metz Hollow Road.

Metz is prohibited from possessing a firearm because he is a convicted felon. He is also a registered sex offender.

According to the State Police web site, Metz was convicted of third degree sexual assault in 1980 for an incident involving a female family member between the ages of 13 and 17.

State Trooper Gallaher of the Preston County State Police is investigating the incident and says there may be additional charges brought up against Metz.

State police in Preston County said a boy was injured in his left arm and leg after another juvenile accidentally dropped a gun.  Police said the injuries are non-life threatening.  

The two kids were home alone at a residence in Tunnelton when it happened, according to a press release from police.

The owner of the gun, James David Metz, is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing a firearm. He is currently in custody for that charge, and additional charges are pending.  

Police said the two kids are 11 and 14, but it is unclear which child was injured in the incident. 

The accident happened at a home on Metz Hollow Road around 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
