When it comes to metropolitan areas with high-income households, three such areas in West Virginia rank among the bottom 12 nationally.

Of the 366 metro areas studied by the Census Bureau, Steubenville-Weirton ranked 363rd in percentage of households with income in the top 5 percent nationally, with only 1.3 percent of households classified as high income. The Cumberland, Maryland, metro area, which includes Mineral County, ranked 357th and Wheeling ranked 355th, both with about 1.4 percent.

The Census Bureau report defines high income as being in the top 5 percent of national income distribution, which is an annual household income of at least $191,469.  

At the other end of the scale, the Washington, D.C., metro area, which includes Jefferson County, was third on the list, at 14.1 percent.

Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Conn., topped the national list with 17.9 percent of households being classified as high income. Danville, Va., was at the bottom, with 1.1 percent.
