A judge in Doddridge County has arraigned Joseph Spencer, 17, on three counts of murder.

The authorities said Spencer killed his mother, father, and 10-year-old sister in September. Spencer was presented with his indictment in court.

Spencer's lawyer said his mental competency has not yet been determined.

The prosecutor asked to take DNA samples from Spencer, but the court made no ruling on this request.

Spencer did not plead guilty or not guilty. Instead, he elected to stand silent.

The judge entered a plea of not guilty for him and set his trial date for April 8.
