The Monongalia County Commission is asking the sheriff's department and chief tax deputy to investigate the $844,373.25 it gave to Monongalia County Schools.

The commission distributed Longview Power's "Payments In-Lieu of Taxes" through direct checks to Monongalia County Schools as requested, rather than through regular tax distribution.

Commissioner Tom Bloom said he's received allegations that the process was done to mislead the tax board and that the money isn't being used appropriately.

"I don't know if that's true or not, but I want to make sure everything the county did was above board, and we followed all the procedures, and I want to make unsure we continue to follow it, but there are concerns with that have happened with this payment," Bloom said.

Commissioners also announced Wednesday that February 20 is the last day residents can file property tax appraisal appeals.
